Tracheostomy Speaking Valves

A speaking valve is an attachment to the connector of a tracheal tube that enables tracheostomy patients with an intact larynx to speak. It works as a one-way valve that allows air to be inhaled uninhibited via the tracheal tube but has a silicone membrane that closes upon exhalation, redirecting airflow into the natural airway.

This makes the air flow along the tube and past the vocal cords towards the mouth, allowing the patient to speak. Speaking valves have a number of applications in tracheostomized patients, including:

  • Speaking with the tracheal tube in situ (fenestrated & with deflated cuff)

  • Speech training with adjustable side openings

  • Reduce air trapping during weaning from ventilator

  • Improve oropharyngeal perception, assist with sensitization and stimulation of the mouth, throat, and swallowing reflex

All in all, speaking valves are of great benefit to tracheostomized patients – allowing ease of communication, keeping the upper respiratory tract stimulated, and helping with early rehabilitation to wean patients off tracheal tubes prior to extubation.
