It all began with a mission

HearWell Audiology Clinic opened its doors in 2011 aiming to provide the best Audiology, Speech Therapy and Hearing Healthcare Service in Tanzania. We are the only such clinic in the country exclusively dedicated to bringing comprehensive hearing healthcare services to the people.

Our Goals

  • We strive to assist our patients in achieving improved quality of life through better hearing and communication abilities. We keep in touch with our patients to ensure that we are doing everything we can to enable them to enjoy life the way it’s meant to be.

  • We have an eye for detail. Providing experiences that leave our patients satisfied is the cornerstone of our centre’s ideals, leading us to receiving our ISO 9001:2015 certification in 2016 after a rigorous compliance audit.

  • Our experienced staff is dedicated to caring for our patients with the highest quality of hearing care and speech therapy in an environment personalized for them. Since our opening, we have been dedicated to expand the scope of our services within the field of hearing health and communication.

Our Timeline

Take a look at where we have come from, our milestones, and our plan for the future to continue our goal of widening the reach of quality hearing care to everyone.

2013

In early 2013 we installed our own Earmold Laboratory and introducing Diagnostic ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response) testing. This was the only such service in the country. Since the introduction of Diagnostic ABR at our facility, we have been able to diagnose hearing loss in children as young as 3 months old to ensure that their speech and language development is not compromised. Diagnostic ABR testing has helped rule out hearing impairment in a large number of children who are thought to have hearing loss on behavioural observation but are in fact children with special needs such as Autism, Down’s Syndrome, Speech Delay and more.

2014

In 2014, the services we introduced postoperative support for Cochlear Implant (CI) patients whereby we began the provision of services such as MAPping (programming), troubleshooting, spare parts, counselling (pre and post surgery) and other CI related services for which patients previously would have had to travel abroad.

2016

In 2016, we took our Quality Management Systems to the next level. We were audited and granted an ISO 9001:2015 certification after upgrading and complying to all the necessary requirements. This was yet again a significant achievement for HearWell. The new scope of service now included Cochlear Implant Support, amongst other things, which ensured our CI patients receive internationally accredited services. We also acquired a state-of-the-art 3D Printer, drastically improving the quality of our ear moulds and reducing the time needed to make them.

2017

In 2017, HearWell made history by facilitating the local CI Surgery program in Tanzania. For the first time in the history of the country, 5 children underwent Cochlear Implantation locally at the Muhimbili National Hospital. HearWell has been working closely with MNH since 2013 to establish a local CI Surgery program, and 2017 saw these efforts turn into reality. The program is on-going and subsequent surgeries have been planned.

2018

2018 saw yet another significant development at HearWell. We became the only specialised clinic to offer objective assessments of the Vestibular System, helping patients suffering from vertigo, dizziness and imbalance. We began diagnosing vestibular disorders and offering the treatment or rehabilitation of these disorders, when possible.

In view of enabling a wider outreach of hearing care, HearWell has established a collaboration with the Aga Khan Hospital - Dar es Salaam. Since August 2018, we have been providing our comprehensive services and quality patient care at the hospital. This collaboration helps make hearing care more accessible while providing time and logistic convenience to patients at the hospital. Over the past year, We implemented an early-stage newborn hearing screening programme at the hospital to screen newborn babies for hearing loss within the first month of life.

2023 and the future

Audiology, speech, and related services have been integrated into multi-disciplinary teams for the evaluation and management of patients through the provision of accurate, high-quality, and patient-centred care. Our hope is to keep extending this service to those who need it, and make a difference as best as we can. Our work for Cochlear Implant Surgeries in Tanzania continues with a substantial increase in surgeries performed every year.
